James Huberty carried an Uzi into a McDonalds in Southern California 25 years ago and killed everyone he could aim at for the next hour and a half. Battled by a lone police officer with a 38 police revolver the whole nation took note and the police learned a valuable lesson in arming their officers.

“He was a loner with a hair-trigger temper who trained attack dogs and talked of killing a lot of people,” wrote The Repository 25 years ago, in the hours after the former Stark County resident killed 21 people in a San Ysidro, Calif., McDonald’s restaurant, and wounded 19 others.”
His name lives on in infamy.
